Environmental charities are mobilising their millions of members to take on the UK government over proposals that weaken environmental and wildlife protections in the push for growth, thereby threatening nature and worsening climate change. The RSPB, the National Trust, the Wildlife Trusts, Wildlife and Countryside link and other groups are encouraging supporters to contact their elected representatives about these proposals:
- Removal from the statute books of 570 laws derived from EU directives that underpin environmental regulations in the UK. These include sewage pollution, water quality, clean air and the habitat regulations, which have protected areas for wildlife for more than 30 years.
- Ending of the moratorium on fracking.
- Creating low-tax investment zones across the UK where environmental protections would be relaxed to encourage development.
- Scrapping the post-Brexit environmental land management scheme (Elms), which pays farmers to enhance nature.
