Dr Kyla Orr, of KelpCrofting, gave a talk on 24th November (hosted by Sleat Community Trust) about setting up a kelp farm just off Pabay, opposite Broadford. Offshore rope grown seaweed farming can be a sustainable way to produce food and other products whilst acting as a carbon sink, as well as diversifying rural employment opportunities. After many months of careful site selection, consultation and licensing, and learning how to seed, grow and harvest kelp Kyla, and local colleagues Alex and Martin, are starting work on processing and product development. They hope to have some kelp products available next year.
