ReRoot has been quiet since the successful Feel Heal Real Food event at the end of April, but things are happening behind the scenes to build on the enthusiasm for transforming our food system evident that day. Sarah Bower, a trustee of the Highland Good Food Partnership attended the event, and wrote this short blog.
Based on feedback contributed by the folk who came to Feel Heal Real Food, there will be a programme of activities over the next few months with visits to food-growing spaces, working groups and food preparation workshops to help develop greater food security and resilience locally. A ReRoot Update will be sent out shortly.
The growing spaces will include gardens and crofts, large and small, informal and commercial, to see what is going on around the area and learn from each other. Let us know if you would like to host a visit to your space. We’re not looking for immaculate grounds. It’s great to see successful growing, but also really useful to see and hear what hasn’t worked as planned and discuss the options for managing problems.
There will be a trial of small work groups helping out with specific projects e.g. creating a new growing space, tidying up a patch of ground, erecting a polytunnel, or planting out.
Later in the summer, John Coghill hopes to host small groups to prepare food together, learning how to make healthy, tasty and affordable meals.
The visits will start on 20th June in Lower Breakish, hosted by Jo and Alistair Headley, and further dates and details will be sent to the ReRoot mailing list when confirmed. ReRoot has mainly been active in the Broadford area so far, but visits are being planned around Skye, Raasay and Lochalsh, and John will be based in Portree.
In addition, a ReRoot YouTube channel is being set up and will start by hosting videos of the talks given at the FHRF event.
