Skye Beach Cleans: massive clearance at Heaste, plus what’s coming up

by Peggy Semler

A brief note on what has been going on in May, and what is currently planned over the summer!

Scottish Coastal Clean Up came to Heaste again 17-19th May, and with the help of their new beach cleaning boat and a number of local residents, removed an enormous amount of marine litter from the shorelines around Heaste and Borreraig.

Some of these more remote beaches have probably never been cleaned before, but it was a great demonstration of how effective the right boat, a number of people and a considerable amount of determination can be in cleaning up our shorelines!

They are planning to come and do a similar exercise in Loch Bracadale at the end of August, so if anyone wants to get involved there, please contact us at skyebeachcleans@gmail.com.

Dr Tom Stanton and his team from Loughborough University are planning to come back to Skye in July and carry out further research, surveying and cleaning work.  Tom was here last summer, and if you haven’t already seen the film summary of their work, see 50 Years of Litter on Skye.  Details of where and when they will be working will be available nearer the time of their visit, but if you are interested in finding out more about their activities, please get in touch via the mailbox.

We are also in the process of planning a clean at Caroy, always one of the worst beaches in Loch Bracadale for litter – hopefully in June.  Details will be posted on our website and FaceBook page.
