Over the last five years, Becky and Paul Smith’s WASTE NOT project at Torrin has kept untold quantities of stuff out of landfill. Under the motto of “One person’s trash is another’s treasure“, folk from across Skye have come to Torrin on Wednesdays to bring and take away preloved and unwanted items that still have useful lives, keeping them in circulation in the community.
WASTE NOT has now closed, and we and many others across Skye thank Becky and Paul for their hard work over the years to make this type of recycling and reuse available to the people of Skye.
And it is good to hear that plans are afoot to take forward the idea of WASTE NOT. In October, Skye and Lochalsh Council for Voluntary Organisations held a Reduce Reuse and Recycle workshop with many community groups participating, as well as businesses and The Highland Council Waste Management Team. The aim was to map out current waste reduction activities and opportunities in Skye and Lochalsh and establish a working group to take forward the call for a coordinated and collaborative approach to waste minimisation activities.
If you would like to learn more – and be part of the working group – please contact Michelle Seviour, Third Sector Support Officer at SLCVO michelle.seviour@slcvo.org.uk
In the meantime, please take any donations of unwanted, pre-loved items to your local charity shop, and ask your neighbours if they need or want anything before disposing of it.
