Talking about food: what’s happening next

Our Talking about Food conversation on 11th January centred on defining the purpose and mission of this informal local group, which meets at the Hebridean Inn and other venues.

From the start, the stated aim has been to create a sustainable local food system with accessible and affordable good food, but individuals differ in their particular interests and possibly in their interpretation. It was decided that the next meeting (22nd February) should focus on agreeing a Mission Statement. That would then make it easier to communicate with others what and why we’re doing what we are, and to invite more of the community to join in. The group also needs a more active and descriptive name and that should follow on having a Mission Statement.

It was decided to create subgroups for different projects. Initial subgroups will focus on growing and on establishing a Food Hub and local market associated with The Hebridean.

A programme is already being developed at the Raasay Walled Garden (pictured). More on this next time.

The Food Hub will build on the experience of the SELF food truck which provided really tasty, healthy meals last year. There will be capacity to provide a greater range of food in a more permanent facility this year. A monthly market for local produce is planned on the first Saturday in the month, starting in May. Food preparation and cooking demonstrations will happen from time to time, and perhaps foraging walks to learn about the local, free food out there.

Other projects in the pipeline are minimising and managing food waste, preserving foods, and accessing land for growing. Let us know if you have a bit of garden or croft that you are not using, but would be willing to let a would-be grower have a go on.
