Highland Council ecologist Dawn Anderson explains that Scotland is globally important for waxcaps – a group of fungi most commonly found on species-rich grasslands, old lawns and graveyards. As Scotland now has only 3% of its original species-rich grasslands, graveyards are becoming increasingly important sites for these beautiful fungi. Highland has 250 graveyards and the Council would like to know which are home to wax caps so that the sites can be managed in the right way.
Full information, identification guides and survey forms can be downloaded from the Highland Environment Forum website. Why not survey your local graveyard and see what you can find?
