Broadford Community Woodland update – new volunteering sessions

by Phil Knott

Hello everyone,

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone that made it along to Camping Skye last Sunday morning for the tree planting and guided walk. With over 30 folk in attendance, we were able to plant 400 trees before lunch, a great achievement. I then led a guided walk through the Growers Hub, past the Community Tree Nursery and some of the very first trees we planted on the site 13 years ago. We then went into the wilder woods and took a newly created informal path to see some of the challenges and opportunities we have in the years ahead.
The whole day was a great success – I am very glad the weather held out for us! A big thank you to our Co-ordinator Christine for the overall co-ordination and the excellent soup and home-baking, and to many of the BSCC staff and directors for their assistance as well. We were very grateful to the Co-op for sponsoring a lot of the food and drink costs.
For the next few weeks, I will be exploring the wilder corners of the Community Woodland, mapping out Invasive Non Native Species, creating informal paths and identifying areas for the next tranche of tree planting. Please get in touch if you are keen to come along on these adventures! They will be almost entirely off-path on challenging, wet ground, and often having to navigate through dense and dark blocks of spruce!
Please liaise directly with me via email if you are keen on coming along on the dates below:
Thursday 4th December – 10am to 2pm
Thursday 11th December – 10am to 2pm
Thursday 18th December – 10am to 2pm
If you are keen to help out, but Thursdays do not work for you, please let me know and I will see what I can do. There will be plenty of practical activity in January – March!
