Bracadale Beach Blitz

by Peggy Semler

From 9 – 11 May, a successful collaborative effort took place to remove marine litter and debris from seven beaches around Loch Bracadale.

Volunteers, along with partner organisations, focused on cleaning remote and inaccessible areas along the coastline.  A local drone pilot assisted in surveying the area prior to the exercise, while community members and local fishermen provided insights on locations with significant litter deposits and the Scottish Coastal Clean Up project’s boat enabled access to otherwise inaccessible sites. Over the three-day event, approximately 5 tonnes of marine plastic contamination were cleared. With volunteers and local, regional and national organisations all pitching in to help, it just shows what can be done!  Read the report with its impressive statistics on how much plastic was removed.

Skye Beach Cleans is now a SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation) with four Trustees – Peggy Semler, Katy Lawrence, Siobhan Barker and Emma Armstrong. We would love to have another two or even three people join us to take the organisation forward, so if you think you might be interested, please get in contact with us at skye.beachcleans@gmail.com!
