Coilltean Caillte (Forgotten woodlands)

This project is being conducted by Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba, the Gaelic place-names partnership. It is mapping all Scottish place-names that indicate a historical woodland presence, resulting in a digital map showing over 15,000 locations. The majority are Gaelic names, but there are also Scots, Old Norse and Pictish elements. These place-names can reveal ecological continuity across time where the woods still exist, or locations that were probably once wooded but are no longer. It is a great resource for anyone interested in land, nature and language.
