SUMMARY:The Story of Plastic - film viewing in your own time
DESCRIPTION:During the first two weeks of June\, we have arranged for SCA supporters to have access on Vimeo to the documentary film The Story of Plastic which was released in April 2020 by the Story of Stuff. We’ll then get together on 16th June to discuss the film and consider if and how we can tackle some of the issues locally. Background materials have been provided to guide this discussion. \nVimeo and Zoom links from anne@skyeclimateaction.org

SUMMARY:Can technology be a force for good in delivering a fair climate future?
DESCRIPTION:As technology providers use our personal data to tailor who and what we see online – there is a risk we become stuck in ‘echo chambers’ – only coming across beliefs or opinions like our own. This event asks: \n\nHow can we break out of these echo chambers\, talking and listening to people with different views from our own?\nWhat ethical responsibilities do social media providers have for spreading fake news and creating division?\nWhat are artists and creative thinkers doing to bridge divides?\nHow can we support those who don’t have access to new technologies?\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Towards a circular economy on Skye
DESCRIPTION:Claire Weaver\, Business Development Manager for ILM\, will join us on 8th June to tell us about the history and development of ILM\, a charity and social enterprise\, which aims to support sustainable employment while working towards a circular economy. ILM is the company that uplifts unwanted domestic electrical appliances from south Skye on the last Wednesday of the month. \nILM provides not only recycling and refurbishment for collected items\, but they also have a retail shop for new and used appliances\, provide Care & Repair and Handyperson services for local elderly and disabled residents\, and they are about to set up a Spares and Repairs service. There are other potential projects in the pipeline. Can we apply some of these ideas to Skye?Contact  anne@skyeclimateaction.org for Zoom link.

SUMMARY:World Refill Day
DESCRIPTION:World Refill Day is a global public awareness campaign calling on businesses\, brands and governments to choose to reuse and help make single-use plastic a thing of the past.  Visit the website to see how you can choose to refuse\, find places to refill and tell businesses to act. \nDuring the COVID19 pandemic\, many outlets banned reusables\, despite the evidence from over 120 scientists stating they are safe to use. As a result single use plastic\, especially in take-away food packaging and PPE\, has exploded and many organisations have abandoned their pledges to reduce single-use products. City to Sea have created guidance and support for businesses to help them return to refill.  If you find a business not accepting reusables\, help them out by sharing the covid and reusables guidance with them.

SUMMARY:Clean Air Day Scotland
DESCRIPTION:The Clean Air Day Scotland campaign encourages people to ditch the car\, particularly for the school run and other shorter trips\, and instead walk or cycle quieter\, less polluting side streets. Also switch off your vehicle engine if it is stationary and safe to do so\, especially outside schools\, shops and COVID-19 test centres\, to reduce the risk of others breathing in harmful particulates. \nThe campaign urges people to consider some of the grants and opportunities to buy or lease an EV or try out an EV by joining a local car club. With more of us homeworking\, can you choose low or zero-emission forms of transport such as cargo bikes or electric vans for essential deliveries? \nYou can encourage your organisation or business to take part\, with toolkits and resources at https://www.cleanairday.org.uk/scotland\, including the Clean Air Day Gaelic logo.

SUMMARY:Exploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhoods: Getting around and accessing services

SUMMARY:Cycling and other green transport on Skye
DESCRIPTION:Cycling and walking reduce emissions and are good for physical and mental health\, but active transport presents challenges in rural areas. We’ll hear about some of the pros and cons from cycling advocates in particular\, with an update on cycleways\, and also touch on other aspects of low-emission transport. Do come along and share your ideas\, opinions and grievances about any kind of transport on the island. You can email particular concerns or questions beforehand to be addressed at the meeting\, or just come along on the day.\nZoom link from anne@skyeclimateaction.org
