SUMMARY:The Future Speaks: Central Scotland high school students question MPs and MSPs on climate change
DESCRIPTION:96% of 18-24 year olds in Scotland are concerned about the escalating climate crisis according to the 2020 Ipsos MORI survey.  How can we give voice to those concerns? \n‘The Future Speaks’ will provide an open forum for young people\, the group most harmed by climate and ecological dangers\, to constructively engage with elected representatives on this most important issue. \nIn this event leading up to COP26 and the Holyrood elections\, local high school students will ask sitting Central Scotland MPs and candidate MSPs questions relating to climate change obligations\, education and action. The panel will include representatives from all major Scottish parties including Gillian Mackay MSP Candidates (Scottish Greens) \nThis event is organised by Sustainability Partnerships and Teach the Future with support from Learning for Sustainability\, The Royal Society of Edinburgh\, The Scottish Mathematical Council\, Geobus\, The Institute of Physics and the Institute of Engineering and Technology. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:A new vision for land use in Scotland: A Story for the Future
DESCRIPTION:A series of evenings discussing future land use in Scotland\, presented by SEDA on conjunction with the James Hutton Institute. \nOver the course of six weeks\, nearly 50 of the best-informed speakers on all aspects of rural land use will engage in six “conversations” — each focused on a different aspect of how land is used and how it could be better used\, in Scotland. The speakers will include LEAF (Linking Environment  And Farming) CEO Caroline Drummond\, social entrepreneur and former Greenpeace scientific  director Jeremy Leggett\, Glasgow University economist Prof Ronald MacDonald\, NatureScot CEO  Francesca Osowska\, Director Crown Estate Scotland & Corrour Estate Hugh Raven\, representing sectors from farming\, forestry\, renewable energy\, to tourism and landowners. \nJoining the speakers will be a selection  carefully curated contributions from Scotland-based poets and musicians\, intended to  stimulate fresh ways of thinking. Musicians and  artists who will participate include Hamish Napier\, Pau de Planet\, Su-a Lee\, Chris Powici\, Kirsty  Law and The Poozies. \nBy going back to basics\, analysing the evidence and discussing new ways of building bridges between different sectors\, SEDA hopes the event will move the debate out of the silos of traditional entrenched positions\, opening up new ways of thinking about land use. One goal is to feed into the Scottish Government’s programme of creating Regional Land Use Frameworks by 2023 – a coherent programme of land reform to maximise the potential of Scotland’s land in tackling climate change. As importantly\, the aim is to make connections between potentially competing future uses of the land\, to see ways they can join up to have the maximum effect\, to start discourse on how they can work together\, and build a picture of what can be achieved and how this process can involve the wider population of the country\, in changing the way the land is seen and used for the future. \n\nMonday 01 March: The Lay of the Land\nMonday 08 March: Soil and Growth\nMonday 15 March: Ecosystems and Energy\nMonday 22 March: Natural Benefits\nMonday 29 March: New Rural Economy\nMonday 12 April: A Story for the Future\n\nTickets for the whole series or individual evenings can be booked here.

SUMMARY:When will it flower? Plants and climate change by Alastair Fitter
DESCRIPTION:Plants now come into flower earlier than they used to\, because of warmer spring temperatures driven by rapid climate change. The scale of change is dramatic but varies greatly among species. The talk will explore the reasons for that and its consequences.\n\n\n\nAlistair Fitter is Emeritus Professor of Ecology at the University of York.\n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Routes to Action: A Scottish Vision for Agroecology
DESCRIPTION:There is growing interest in agroecology and how we transition to a food and farming system which works in harmony with nature\, adapts to climate changes\, builds a thriving farming sector and sustainably provides citizens with healthy and nutritious food. \nFFCC’s latest report Farming for Change introduces new research from IDDRI which includes comprehensive and systematic technical modelling for a transition to agroecology across UK nations. FFCC are now exploring how to translate this detailed and rigorous piece of research into practical projects which support the transition to agroecology by 2030.
