SUMMARY:First steps on a journey towards a sustainable energy supply for Skye and Raasay
DESCRIPTION:Skye Climate Action and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) have begun a conversation about community engagement and potential future community energy benefits. \nUnder its Resilience as a Service programme\, SSEN is proposing a two-year trial to provide a system to quickly restore supply to customers when there is a fault on the line\, replacing back-up diesel generators with a 4 MW battery. This would cover 90% of all potential demand for 4 hours. The battery could eventually facilitate the development of new green energy systems based in the community. \nThe meeting with SSEN and E-ON will inform the public of the planned trial\, and ask and answer questions\, marking the start of a broader engagement plan. The meeting will focus on the aim of the trial – resilience to paying customers – as this has to be in place before anything else can happen. \nPlease email us for the MS teams link for the meeting.

SUMMARY:A repair scheme for Skye
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor meeting at Torrin to help us continue developing ideas for a repair scheme on Skye.  Bring your own picnic! \nWe are very keen to hear your ideas and feedback on this evolving project\, and we welcome everyone who would like to join this initiative. Please contact Anne with suggestions or for more information. \nThere is already a lot of local interest in extending the useful life of clothes\, shoes\, tools\, appliances and anything else\, by mending\, fixing\, or restoring. Two meetings with SCA supporters during June brought together people with a range of skills and lots of great ideas and enthusiasm. The discussion and practical examples of things needing mending (e.g. clothing\, garden tools\, radios\, computers) enabled us to start working out what would be needed when the community is invited to bring along their damaged items. \nAt present\, our vision for developing a repair culture includes a forum for teaching techniques\, with workshops for specific skills. It could be that some items are dropped off\, repaired and sold on cheaply. Perhaps there could be hubs to collect materials and items for re-use or recycling. We are keen to tap into the making and mending skills of the older generation\, and to encourage intergenerational collaboration. \nThere are still many details to be worked through including venue(s)\, communication strategies and the gathering of information and resources. We don’t want to adversely affect commercial repairers and so we plan to keep a list of them so that we can channel business towards them\, as appropriate. \nWhat is the connection between repairing our stuff and the climate emergency? \nRepair workshops and cafes are springing up around Scotland and worldwide\, to reduce the amount of our stuff going to landfill. Making things last longer helps us to value possessions more\, learn new skills\, share expertise and tools and reduce demand for new goods (consumerism) therefore saving money and resources. It can build community resilience as well as reducing waste. The extractive processes that underpin consumerism drive climate change and biodiversity loss\, pushing us towards the planetary boundaries. Learning new ways of recognising and satisfying our needs (rather than our wants) is valuable mitigation.

SUMMARY:Cutting edge issues of the energy transition: UK climate ambitions vs paralysis of decision-making to phase out fossil fuels
DESCRIPTION:A lunch time event hosted by ReWiRE (Regen’s Women in Renewables Network). \nIn two progress reports\, published on 24 June\, the UK’s Committee on Climate Change “offers its appraisal of progress on the twin climate challenges: cutting emissions to Net Zero and adapting to the climate risks facing the UK. They draw on the Committee’s comprehensive analysis of the UK’s Sixth Carbon Budget and their recent third Climate Change Risk Assessment to present more than 200 climate policy recommendations\, covering every part of government. \nAs the Climate Change Committee’s report notes\, the renewables sector has led the way in reducing carbon emissions and has a crucial role to play in helping the country reach Net Zero. However\, the assessment from the Climate Change Committee has laid bare the gap between the government’s climate ambition and the paralysis of decision making on key policies to phase out the use of fossil fuels. \nRachel Hay (lead analyst – buildings at The Committee on Climate Change) will join us to give an overview of the reports and the clear messages they have presented to government\, including on the Net Zero Strategy. Following this we will then take a deep dive into heat and buildings. ” \nBook here.

SUMMARY:SCA meeting with Skye & Raasay Investment Plan committee
DESCRIPTION:How do you wish Skye and Raasay to develop over the next 10 years – and what don’t you want to see happen? The Skye and Raasay Investment Plan*** aims to achieve the outcomes of Sustainable Tourism\, a  Diverse and Green Economy\, good Digital and Transport Infrastructure\, and Strengthening Communities. \nJoin our meeting to hear about the current plans and ambitions\, put your questions\, make suggestions\, affirm the decisions made or express your cautions. \nIt is vital that Scotland\, including Skye and Raasay\, has a Just Transition to a net zero society by 2045\, and that our recovery from the pandemic is ‘Just’ and ‘Green’. Contributing to the Investment Plan is therefore an opportunity for you to influence these major adjustments to current ‘norms’ as they exist right here in our community. There have already been workshops in January and June this year to discuss the Plan\, and do also comment on the priorities online. \nContact Anne for the zoom link. \n***The Skye and Raasay Investment Plan is being developed under the leadership of The Highland Council (THC)\, and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE)\, building towards outcomes established in 2020: Sustainable Tourism\, a  Diverse and Green Economy\, good Digital and Transport Infrastructure\, and Strengthening Communities. These outcomes considered “poverty reduction\, supporting community participation and dialogue\, community safety\, resilience and mental health and wellbeing as motivators to address inequality for the people of the islands.”  The Investment Plan aims to “establish a collaborative approach for public sector agencies\, businesses\, the 3rd sector and the wider community to work together to prioritise and coordinate investment opportunities in the area.”

SUMMARY:Break free from plastic
DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution is a major problem in our world and yet it is still being churned out (with significant climate costs) and there are plans to manufacture even more in the coming years. SCA has become an associate member of the international ‘Break Free from Plastic‘ organisation\, and their resources can help us to make the break\, both locally and also perhaps joining with national or global events. \nFor this meeting during ‘Plastic-free July’ we’ll have 3 speakers with time for questions and answers. Inspired by these talks\, we will then discuss how we can raise awareness\, potential actions to break free of the ubiquitous unnecessary plastic in our lives. \nOur speakers are:  Thomas Prentice on approaches to managing waste plastic\, Anne MacLennan on climate impacts of plastic\, and Emma and Amy from the Selkie Collective will bring ideas for avoiding plastic use in our daily lives. \nAll welcome: join the discussion or if you prefer\, just sit in and listen. \nYou can obtain the zoom link from Anne.

SUMMARY:Exploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhoods: Getting around and accessing services
DESCRIPTION:The 20-minute concept has gained attention internationally and has been developed in cities such as Melbourne\, Portland and Paris. The concept looks at having all your basic needs – health and social care\, shops\, work hubs\, places to socialise –  met within a 20-minute walk\, wheel or cycle from where you live. \nThe Scottish Government’s 2020-21 Programme for Government  announced the ambition of 20- minute neighbourhoods and the concept has gained significant traction since the COVID-19 pandemic with people staying closer to home to access support and services. \nThe  Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland is holding four events\, each with a panel of speakers and breakout rooms. \n\nExploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhood: Introduction Thu 6th May (13:00 to 14:30pm)\nExploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhood: Getting around and accessing services Thursday 17th June (13:00 to 14:30)\nExploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhood: Social connection\, housing and greenspace Thu 15th July (13:00 to 14:30)\nExploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhood: Designing in the community Thu 26th Aug (13:00 to 14:30)\n\nTo sign up to the first event\, please send an email to event@alliance-scotland.org.uk

SUMMARY:Clean Air Day Scotland
DESCRIPTION:The Clean Air Day Scotland campaign encourages people to ditch the car\, particularly for the school run and other shorter trips\, and instead walk or cycle quieter\, less polluting side streets. Also switch off your vehicle engine if it is stationary and safe to do so\, especially outside schools\, shops and COVID-19 test centres\, to reduce the risk of others breathing in harmful particulates. \nThe campaign urges people to consider some of the grants and opportunities to buy or lease an EV or try out an EV by joining a local car club. With more of us homeworking\, can you choose low or zero-emission forms of transport such as cargo bikes or electric vans for essential deliveries? \nYou can encourage your organisation or business to take part\, with toolkits and resources at https://www.cleanairday.org.uk/scotland\, including the Clean Air Day Gaelic logo.

SUMMARY:World Refill Day
DESCRIPTION:World Refill Day is a global public awareness campaign calling on businesses\, brands and governments to choose to reuse and help make single-use plastic a thing of the past.  Visit the website to see how you can choose to refuse\, find places to refill and tell businesses to act. \nDuring the COVID19 pandemic\, many outlets banned reusables\, despite the evidence from over 120 scientists stating they are safe to use. As a result single use plastic\, especially in take-away food packaging and PPE\, has exploded and many organisations have abandoned their pledges to reduce single-use products. City to Sea have created guidance and support for businesses to help them return to refill.  If you find a business not accepting reusables\, help them out by sharing the covid and reusables guidance with them.

SUMMARY:Towards a circular economy on Skye
DESCRIPTION:Claire Weaver\, Business Development Manager for ILM\, will join us on 8th June to tell us about the history and development of ILM\, a charity and social enterprise\, which aims to support sustainable employment while working towards a circular economy. ILM is the company that uplifts unwanted domestic electrical appliances from south Skye on the last Wednesday of the month. \nILM provides not only recycling and refurbishment for collected items\, but they also have a retail shop for new and used appliances\, provide Care & Repair and Handyperson services for local elderly and disabled residents\, and they are about to set up a Spares and Repairs service. There are other potential projects in the pipeline. Can we apply some of these ideas to Skye?Contact  anne@skyeclimateaction.org for Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Can technology be a force for good in delivering a fair climate future?
DESCRIPTION:As technology providers use our personal data to tailor who and what we see online – there is a risk we become stuck in ‘echo chambers’ – only coming across beliefs or opinions like our own. This event asks: \n\nHow can we break out of these echo chambers\, talking and listening to people with different views from our own?\nWhat ethical responsibilities do social media providers have for spreading fake news and creating division?\nWhat are artists and creative thinkers doing to bridge divides?\nHow can we support those who don’t have access to new technologies?\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:A Rye Story\, with grower and community art worker Joss Allen
DESCRIPTION:How might thinking with seeds help us to reconfigure conventional domestication narratives and how they influence the ways many of us stage our relationships with the non-human world? Picking up a thread from a previous event hosted by Atlas on seeds and seed saving\, Joss would like us to take a journey with rye\, following its migration from the meadows of Anatolia to the fields of northern Europe. A short speculative fabulation as a provocation to get us thinking differently about seed-human relations and how we might rethink notions of care\, agency and domestication.  \n\n\nJoss Allen can be found at the edges of the garden\, amongst the weeds and compost heaps. He is a gardener and cultural worker interested in exploring how creative practices can shape community economies and ecological ways of being in playful\, radical\, responsive and meaningful ways. Adopting a curatorial and socially-engaged art practice with an emphasis on engendering collaborations across disciplines\, education\, storytelling and community-building. His work has been influenced by his time as a support worker for adults with autism\, a labourer on an organic farm and a refuse collector\, among others. He recently co-ordinated a three-year community food growing project\, Town is the Garden (2017–20)\, with Deveron Projects\, Huntly\, Scotland. Joss currently lives in Helsinki\, Finland\, and is in the process of establishing a local seed library and pursuing a PhD research project on seed saving and story.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpaces for this event are limited. SUMMARY:Skye Climate Action: Inspirational Growing!
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Sustainability pop up is on growing – for gardeners and crofters – with an inspirational line-up of speakers organised by Phil Knott of Wildlife Croft\, Drumfearn. Phil\, Anna from West Coast Organics (near Dunvegan)\, Donald Murdie from Robson and Murdie Skye Local Produce (Galtrigill)\, and Ludwig Appeltans from Rubha Phoil (Armadale) will each will give a short illustrated presentation\, followed by questions and discussion. \nOur pop-up Sustainability meetings aim to bring together people on Skye to inform and then discuss a range of topics relevant to addressing the climate crisis.  They are open to anyone who is interested. Tell your friends and neighbours. We want everyone to be talking about climate change and getting excited about developing more sustainable ways of living and working on the island so that we can enjoy an increasingly resilient\, healthy\, caring and thriving community. \nPlease get in touch if there is a topic you would like to have discussed. You could suggest potential contributors as well or just tell us what you want to hear about and leave it to us to find people willing to share their knowledge and experience to stimulate discussion – and action. \nOther topics we plan to address in the coming months include repair and refurbishing (clothes\, household items)\, cycling and other transport\, and discussion of the Skye and Raasay Investment Plan. There may be an opportunity to show films as well. \nContact: anne@skyeclimateaction.org for the zoom link\, and more information. \n
