SUMMARY:ReRoot Film Club: local marine-themed films
DESCRIPTION:The July film evening will be themed to link with the Marine Litter open day on 27 July. Two short films based right here in Skye and Lochalsh illustrate the horrors of whale entanglement and the trial of a new fishing technique to avoid entanglement. The third film is yet to be confirmed. \nWe are delighted that local experts\, Ellie and Zoe\, will join us for a Q + A session after the films. Light refreshments will be available as people arrive before the screening starts at 6.15 pm prompt. Doors open from 5.30 pm. While not essential to book\, it would be helpful to register on the SBS Events page (available from 10 July) or let me know that you plan to be there for catering purposes – and to ensure that you don’t miss out on a seat. \nThe 17th July screening  will complete the current series of ReRoot film evenings. All of the films have been good to watch and learn from. Some feel-good and some a bit more uncomfortable\, but each followed by discussion picking up on good and less good points. \nThe plan is to run another series over the winter months\, but more of that later. Bright pink and hard to miss\, this is available 24 hrs and anything with a plug\, battery or cable can be recycled! \nPLEASE NOTE:\n– Recycle batteries\, vapes and lightbulbs separately.\n– If the bin is full or your item is too large for the container opening\, do not leave items next to the bin. DESCRIPTION:ReRoot is visiting Donald Murdie and Sue on their croft in Galtrigill\, north of Dunvegan. \nDonald and Sue acquired a derelict croft 17 years ago and developed it on organic principles to become a productive area\, providing for their own needs with surplus made available to the local community. They put particular emphasis on soil health and are happy to share some of their knowledge and experience with us. \nWe’ll walk round the croft and growing areas first and then there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion over a cup of tea and nibbles. \nNumbers are limited to about 20 people\, so please get in touch if you’d like to come along\,\nCar sharing is encouraged to get there and we may further share transport by leaving some vehicles in Dunvegan as there is not much parking space at the croft. \nPlease get in touch by May 29 th if you‘d like to come\, or for more details. \nContact aomacl@tighgorm.scot \n

SUMMARY:ReRoot Film Club: Food Forest
DESCRIPTION:Book here.\n\nFood Forest is a 2022 documentary from the Food Forest Institute in Belgium. It shows us  ‘how food forests can save the earth from suffocation\, resuscitate communities\, make agriculture sustainable\, reverse global warming and still produce an abundance of food.’ \nThe film visits gardens of food forest pioneers in a variety of settings and countries to show that  ‘nature appears to be the best healer for the social\, psychological and ecological scars that people have caused.’ The film maker suggests that a new Eden can be created by working with nature. \nForest gardens are agronomic systems designed to mimic a natural forest\, with a diverse mix of trees\, shrubs and perennial plants to create a stable and sustainable ecosystem. After a big set-up input\, a forest garden should be low maintenance\, productive and resilient. DESCRIPTION:Drop off your unwanted domestic electrical appliances – large or small\, anything with a plug or battery – at Kyleakin Community Hall  between 11 am and 1 pm. \nPLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF ITEMS OUTWITH THESE TIMES. \nItems will be collected by ILM Highland and either fully recycled or selected for reuse. Items suitable for reuse are removed from the waste stream and taken to their Reuse Workshop to undergo a thorough testing\, cleaning and refurbishment process\, including PAT testing\, ready for sale. \nSome items are kept for repair and re-use on Skye. \nNew – Additional Electrical Recycling option!\nVery happy to announce that we now have a ‘small electricals’ Bring Bank Bin located in Kyleakin car park\, next to the clothing recycling container. Bright pink and hard to miss\, this is available 24 hrs and anything with a plug\, battery or cable can be recycled! \nPLEASE NOTE:\n– Recycle batteries\, vapes and lightbulbs separately.\n– If the bin is full or your item is too large for the container opening\, do not leave items next to the bin. Instead\, meet the ILM Highland van at one of the monthly drop off sessions at Kyleakin Community Hall.

DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Crofters Federation is running a series of seasonal croft horticulture online workshops\, with Isle of Lewis crofter and market gardener\, John Hamilton\, giving  practical advice on planning\, planting\, soil\, compost\, harvesting\, selling\, growing all year round\, and scaling up production.\nThe first course is on Monday 12 May\, 7 pm – 9 pm\, by zoom\, covering\nEquipment and tools;\nSoil preparation;\nTransplanting and direct sowing;\nPlanting spacings. \nThe next courses are\nHarvesting and preparing for selling\, 15th July 2025\nPreserving and growing over winter\, 26th August 2025\nPlanning for a market garden\, 14th October 2025\nPreparing for the season\, 17th February 2026 \nCost per woprkshop: £20 for members; £35 for non-members.
