SUMMARY:How Highland pensions are driving the climate crisis and what we can do about it
DESCRIPTION:The Highland Council pension fund invests over £40 million in fossil fuel companies that are fuelling the climate crisis\, including BP and mining giant BHP. \nThe Highland Council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019\, but we need to see it take action to stop funding the climate crisis to back up these words. \nOn Thursday 26th August at 7pm\, join us for an evening of inspiring speakers\, films and climate action to learn how Highland pensions can help tackle the climate crisis. \nWe’ll be joined by guest speakers from both the Highlands and South America who will share how the Highland Council pension fund’s investments directly lead to injustice and pollution for communities around the world. \nWe’ll also hear about the new Fossil Free Highlands campaign to end these investments and find out how we can call on our councillors\, MSPs and pension funds to make the shift to ethical investments and a fossil free future. \nThere will be a chance to meet other people from across the Highlands and beyond\, and to discuss how we can take meaningful climate action together in the run up to the UN climate conference\,COP26\, which is taking place in Glasgow in November. DESCRIPTION:The 20-minute concept has gained attention internationally and has been developed in cities such as Melbourne\, Portland and Paris. SUMMARY:Our Living Landscape: Communities Leading Change
DESCRIPTION:Coigach & Assynt Living Landscape (CALL)  in the far north west of Scotland is a partnership of community\, charity and private landowners and charities working together to improve both the environmental and economic prospects of this very remote part of Scotland. \nOver 30 projects have been carried out\, included upgrading and creating almost 13km of paths\, including routes over the iconic mountains of Quinag and Suilven; nearly 600ha of native woodlands planted and managed; innovative training programmes for deer management and crofters; and an outdoor woodland learning project that has worked with every school in the area. \nThe conference will showcase what has been achieved in the past years and share experience and knowledge\, and provide networking opportunities with other practitioners in the field of landscape-scale conservation \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:First steps on a journey towards a sustainable energy supply for Skye and Raasay
DESCRIPTION:Skye Climate Action and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) have begun a conversation about community engagement and potential future community energy benefits. \nUnder its Resilience as a Service programme\, SSEN is proposing a two-year trial to provide a system to quickly restore supply to customers when there is a fault on the line\, replacing back-up diesel generators with a 4 MW battery. This would cover 90% of all potential demand for 4 hours. The battery could eventually facilitate the development of new green energy systems based in the community. \nThe meeting with SSEN and E-ON will inform the public of the planned trial\, and ask and answer questions\, marking the start of a broader engagement plan. The meeting will focus on the aim of the trial – resilience to paying customers – as this has to be in place before anything else can happen. \nPlease email us for the MS teams link for the meeting.

SUMMARY:A repair scheme for Skye
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor meeting at Torrin to help us continue developing ideas for a repair scheme on Skye.  Bring your own picnic! \nWe are very keen to hear your ideas and feedback on this evolving project\, and we welcome everyone who would like to join this initiative. Please contact Anne with suggestions or for more information. \nThere is already a lot of local interest in extending the useful life of clothes\, shoes\, tools\, appliances and anything else\, by mending\, fixing\, or restoring. Two meetings with SCA supporters during June brought together people with a range of skills and lots of great ideas and enthusiasm. The discussion and practical examples of things needing mending (e.g. clothing\, garden tools\, radios\, computers) enabled us to start working out what would be needed when the community is invited to bring along their damaged items. \nAt present\, our vision for developing a repair culture includes a forum for teaching techniques\, with workshops for specific skills. It could be that some items are dropped off\, repaired and sold on cheaply. Perhaps there could be hubs to collect materials and items for re-use or recycling. We are keen to tap into the making and mending skills of the older generation\, and to encourage intergenerational collaboration. \nThere are still many details to be worked through including venue(s)\, communication strategies and the gathering of information and resources. We don’t want to adversely affect commercial repairers and so we plan to keep a list of them so that we can channel business towards them\, as appropriate. \nWhat is the connection between repairing our stuff and the climate emergency? \nRepair workshops and cafes are springing up around Scotland and worldwide\, to reduce the amount of our stuff going to landfill. Making things last longer helps us to value possessions more\, learn new skills\, share expertise and tools and reduce demand for new goods (consumerism) therefore saving money and resources. It can build community resilience as well as reducing waste. The extractive processes that underpin consumerism drive climate change and biodiversity loss\, pushing us towards the planetary boundaries. Learning new ways of recognising and satisfying our needs (rather than our wants) is valuable mitigation.

DESCRIPTION:A lunch time event hosted by ReWiRE (Regen’s Women in Renewables Network). \nIn two progress reports\, published on 24 June\, the UK’s Committee on Climate Change “offers its appraisal of progress on the twin climate challenges: cutting emissions to Net Zero and adapting to the climate risks facing the UK. They draw on the Committee’s comprehensive analysis of the UK’s Sixth Carbon Budget and their recent third Climate Change Risk Assessment to present more than 200 climate policy recommendations\, covering every part of government. \nAs the Climate Change Committee’s report notes\, the renewables sector has led the way in reducing carbon emissions and has a crucial role to play in helping the country reach Net Zero. However\, the assessment from the Climate Change Committee has laid bare the gap between the government’s climate ambition and the paralysis of decision making on key policies to phase out the use of fossil fuels. \nRachel Hay (lead analyst – buildings at The Committee on Climate Change) will join us to give an overview of the reports and the clear messages they have presented to government\, including on the Net Zero Strategy. The Skye and Raasay Investment Plan*** aims to achieve the outcomes of Sustainable Tourism\, a  Diverse and Green Economy\, good Digital and Transport Infrastructure\, and Strengthening Communities. \nJoin our meeting to hear about the current plans and ambitions\, put your questions\, make suggestions\, affirm the decisions made or express your cautions. \nIt is vital that Scotland\, including Skye and Raasay\, has a Just Transition to a net zero society by 2045\, and that our recovery from the pandemic is ‘Just’ and ‘Green’. Contributing to the Investment Plan is therefore an opportunity for you to influence these major adjustments to current ‘norms’ as they exist right here in our community. DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution is a major problem in our world and yet it is still being churned out (with significant climate costs) and there are plans to manufacture even more in the coming years. SCA has become an associate member of the international ‘Break Free from Plastic‘ organisation\, and their resources can help us to make the break\, both locally and also perhaps joining with national or global events. \nFor this meeting during ‘Plastic-free July’ we’ll have 3 speakers with time for questions and answers. SUMMARY:SCA Electrical Amnesty - domestic appliance recycling
DESCRIPTION:Drop off your unwanted domestic electrical appliances – large or small\, anything with a plug or battery – at Ashaig Camp Site between 11 am and 1 pm.  Items will be collected by ILM Highland and either fully recycled or selected for reuse. Items suitable for reuse are removed from the waste stream and taken to their Reuse Workshop to undergo a thorough testing\, cleaning and refurbishment process\, including PAT testing\, ready for sale. \nMore info here in ILM’s blog\, and watch a video here.

SUMMARY:Exploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhoods: Getting around and accessing services
DESCRIPTION:The 20-minute concept has gained attention internationally and has been developed in cities such as Melbourne\, Portland and Paris. DESCRIPTION:World Refill Day is a global public awareness campaign calling on businesses\, brands and governments to choose to reuse and help make single-use plastic a thing of the past.  Visit the website to see how you can choose to refuse\, find places to refill and tell businesses to act. \nDuring the COVID19 pandemic\, many outlets banned reusables\, despite the evidence from over 120 scientists stating they are safe to use. As a result single use plastic\, especially in take-away food packaging and PPE\, has exploded and many organisations have abandoned their pledges to reduce single-use products. City to Sea have created guidance and support for businesses to help them return to refill.  If you find a business not accepting reusables\, help them out by sharing the covid and reusables guidance with them.

DESCRIPTION:Claire Weaver\, Business Development Manager for ILM\, will join us on 8th June to tell us about the history and development of ILM\, a charity and social enterprise\, which aims to support sustainable employment while working towards a circular economy. ILM is the company that uplifts unwanted domestic electrical appliances from south Skye on the last Wednesday of the month. \nILM provides not only recycling and refurbishment for collected items\, but they also have a retail shop for new and used appliances\, provide Care & Repair and Handyperson services for local elderly and disabled residents\, and they are about to set up a Spares and Repairs service.
