SUMMARY:Break free from plastic
DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution is a major problem in our world and yet it is still being churned out (with significant climate costs) and there are plans to manufacture even more in the coming years. SCA has become an associate member of the international ‘Break Free from Plastic‘ organisation\, and their resources can help us to make the break\, both locally and also perhaps joining with national or global events. \nFor this meeting during ‘Plastic-free July’ we’ll have 3 speakers with time for questions and answers. DESCRIPTION:Drop off your unwanted domestic electrical appliances – large or small\, anything with a plug or battery – at Ashaig Camp Site between 11 am and 1 pm.  Items will be collected by ILM Highland and either fully recycled or selected for reuse. DESCRIPTION:The 20-minute concept has gained attention internationally and has been developed in cities such as Melbourne\, Portland and Paris. DESCRIPTION:World Refill Day is a global public awareness campaign calling on businesses\, brands and governments to choose to reuse and help make single-use plastic a thing of the past.  Visit the website to see how you can choose to refuse\, find places to refill and tell businesses to act. \nDuring the COVID19 pandemic\, many outlets banned reusables\, despite the evidence from over 120 scientists stating they are safe to use. As a result single use plastic\, especially in take-away food packaging and PPE\, has exploded and many organisations have abandoned their pledges to reduce single-use products. City to Sea have created guidance and support for businesses to help them return to refill.  If you find a business not accepting reusables\, help them out by sharing the covid and reusables guidance with them.

ILM is the company that uplifts unwanted domestic electrical appliances from south Skye on the last Wednesday of the month. \nILM provides not only recycling and refurbishment for collected items\, but they also have a retail shop for new and used appliances\, provide Care & Repair and Handyperson services for local elderly and disabled residents\, and they are about to set up a Spares and Repairs service. SUMMARY:A Rye Story\, with grower and community art worker Joss Allen
DESCRIPTION:How might thinking with seeds help us to reconfigure conventional domestication narratives and how they influence the ways many of us stage our relationships with the non-human world? Picking up a thread from a previous event hosted by Atlas on seeds and seed saving\, Joss would like us to take a journey with rye\, following its migration from the meadows of Anatolia to the fields of northern Europe. A short speculative fabulation as a provocation to get us thinking differently about seed-human relations and how we might rethink notions of care\, agency and domestication.  \n\n\nJoss Allen can be found at the edges of the garden\, amongst the weeds and compost heaps. He is a gardener and cultural worker interested in exploring how creative practices can shape community economies and ecological ways of being in playful\, radical\, responsive and meaningful ways. Adopting a curatorial and socially-engaged art practice with an emphasis on engendering collaborations across disciplines\, education\, storytelling and community-building. His work has been influenced by his time as a support worker for adults with autism\, a labourer on an organic farm and a refuse collector\, among others. He recently co-ordinated a three-year community food growing project\, Town is the Garden (2017–20)\, with Deveron Projects\, Huntly\, Scotland. Joss currently lives in Helsinki\, Finland\, and is in the process of establishing a local seed library and pursuing a PhD research project on seed saving and story.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpaces for this event are limited. SUMMARY:Skye Climate Action:  Inspirational Growing!
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Sustainability pop up is on growing – for gardeners and crofters – with an inspirational line-up of speakers organised by Phil Knott of Wildlife Croft\, Drumfearn. Phil\, Anna from West Coast Organics (near Dunvegan)\, Donald Murdie from Robson and Murdie Skye Local Produce (Galtrigill)\, and Ludwig Appeltans from Rubha Phoil (Armadale) will each will give a short illustrated presentation\, followed by questions and discussion. \nOur pop-up Sustainability meetings aim to bring together people on Skye to inform and then discuss a range of topics relevant to addressing the climate crisis.  They are open to anyone who is interested. Tell your friends and neighbours. We want everyone to be talking about climate change and getting excited about developing more sustainable ways of living and working on the island so that we can enjoy an increasingly resilient\, healthy\, caring and thriving community. \nPlease get in touch if there is a topic you would like to have discussed. You could suggest potential contributors as well or just tell us what you want to hear about and leave it to us to find people willing to share their knowledge and experience to stimulate discussion – and action. \nOther topics we plan to address in the coming months include repair and refurbishing (clothes\, household items)\, cycling and other transport\, and discussion of the Skye and Raasay Investment Plan. SUMMARY:Climate Exp0: A fusion of science and policy\, advancing a resilient\, zero-carbon world
DESCRIPTION:In the run up to Cop26\, universities from the UK and Italy are organising a 5-day programme on climate change and policy research across five themes: \n\nGreen Recovery\nNature-based Solutions\nMitigation Solutions\nAdaptation and Resilience\nFinance and Regulation\n\nThe Climate Exp0 is supported by the 2021 UN Climate Change Summit (COP26) and takes place at a critical juncture in the COP26 pre-meetings and negotiations. Online\, free and open to all\, it enables global policymakers\, academics\, practitioners\, students and members of the public to gather together to collaborate\, share and debate climate change policy\, ahead of the COP26 negotiations in November. \nSo far\, over 200 international speakers and contributors are confirmed. SUMMARY:Growing native trees from seed
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Knott for a practical talk on how to grow your own trees at home. There has been a huge shift towards tree planting in recent years\, and this is likely to continue\, greatly increasing the demand for trees.  However\, it can be hard to source local provenance stock of native species\, and growing your own is an option for most of us\, with very little space and effort needed.   \nPhil has been involved in amateur tree growing for as long as he can remember and grows several thousand trees on his croft each year.  This talk will focus on the whole process\, from seed and cutting collection to stratification and storage to onward aftercare.  It will be full of lots of practical tips on this extremely rewarding activity. \nBook here.
