SUMMARY:Integrating trees into your farm or smallholding business
DESCRIPTION:Trees are an effective tool for a variety of purposes in any farm design\, whether you are managing a lot of hectares or a small homestead. Soil Association Scotland discusses why and how to integrate trees into farm designs with Rosa Bevan and James Reid\, from small farm and market garden Tap o’ Noth\, Aberdeenshire\, and arable farmer Roger Howison\, of 537-acre Parkhill Farm in Fife. \nBook here

SUMMARY:Jonathon Porritt talk: Decarbonisation and recarbonisation: Understanding the net zero challenge
DESCRIPTION:Securing a stable climate for the future of humankind depends as much on recarbonising natural systems (soils\, forests\, bogs\, etc) as it does on decarbonising our industrial economy.  So why do we still hear so little about the recarbonisation agenda? Why will COP26 in Glasgow next year be dominated by decarbonisation narratives\, with Nature-Based Solutions coming in a poor second? \nJonathon Porritt\, Founder Director of Forum for the Future and environmental campaigner for more than 45 years\, will explain the issues in a lecture for University of Bath Institute for Policy Research \nJonathon’s book Hope in Hell\, a powerful ‘call to action’ on the Climate Emergency\, was published in June 2020. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Seed saving in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Gaia Foundation is rolling out an ambitious seed training programme in Scotland over two years.  These courses aim to train seed savers in Scotland to a professional level.  The focus is primarily on vegetable seeds and specifically for Scottish growing conditions. \nRegister       (limited places) \nFor specific queries email Richie Walsh (richie@gaianet.org) \nA short intro course\, offered as live webinars on two Saturdays\, the 23rd of January and the 20th of February\, will cover seed plant biology & reproduction systems\, growing seed crops\, intro to harvesting and processing\, seed production\, and planning. The last topic had not been covered in previous intro courses and will be presented by experienced market-gardener and commercial seed producer Ellen Rignall of Trill Farm. \nThis intro course is a gateway to the intermediate course that will follow immediately after in March with 9 webinars spread over the rest of the year; more in-depth and hands-on\, requiring trainees to grow at least one seed crop. Those who wish to further progress can then apply to an advanced course in 2022. \nThe intro course will cost £30 for two 3-hour webinars\, with a sliding scale to allow low-income persons to enroll as well. The course will be repeated in the second half of 2020. \nThe Gaia Foundation is passionate about regenerating cultural and biological diversity\, and restoring a respectful relationship with the Earth. Together with long-term partners in Africa\, South America\, Asia and Europe\, we work with local communities to secure land\, seed\, food and water sovereignty. By reviving indigenous knowledge and protecting sacred natural sites\, local self-governance is strengthened. This enables communities to become more resilient to climate change and the industrial processes which have caused the many crises we now face. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to polytunnel and greenhouse growing: training course
DESCRIPTION:This two-evening training course\, run by West Highland College\, provides the practical skills and confidence necessary to maximise the fruit and vegetable production possible with a poly-tunnel or greenhouse. The techniques and principles of growing in such a sheltered environment will be introduced to participants along with an introduction to choosing a tunnel and irrigation alternatives\, choosing a site and construction considerations. This course will allow you to develop your growing skills\, extend the growing season to increase production in your own garden\, farm or croft or as the basis for productive indoor growing in a work environment\, and to generate additional income. \n16th and 23rd February. SUMMARY:Moray’s Climate Assembly: It’s a Fair COP26
DESCRIPTION:The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) will take place in November 2021 in Glasgow. This is arguably one of the most important meetings that will determine global efforts to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. \nIn response\, tsiMORAY is establishing Moray’s Climate Assembly to highlight existing\, and stimulate new\, local action on climate change. \nJoin them for their first of many climate assemblies exploring: \n\n\n\nWhat COP26 is and why it is important to Moray\nWhat is already happening in Moray to deal with climate change and ways to get involved/collaborate\nNew actions to make net zero emissions by 2045 (or sooner) a reality in Moray.\n\n\n\nKeynote address by Dr Martin Valenti – Head of Climate Enterprise at Scottish Enterprise. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Skye Climate Action : steering group meeting
DESCRIPTION:Skye Climate Action came into existence in August 2019. Since then it has grown and changed organically. It is now felt important to review where we are at and how we can best work towards our aim of working together for a climate friendly Skye by reducing Skye’s carbon footprint and preparing for the challenges that are happening to our climate.\n\nIn order to prepare ourselves for the coming vital year we are inviting you to join the steering  group in a review and the future planning of Skye Climate Action\, on zoom.\n\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Storytelling event with Seoras Macpherson\, Skye
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online storytelling session and conversation with Glendale-based story teller Seoras Macpherson and filmmaker Andrew Black\, as we explore stories of land and community in Skye and the Highlands. This event is part of the Plural Futures Film commission\, a collaboration between Atlas Arts and Skye Climate Action. \nSeoras has devoted his life to telling the stories of his native place\, and has an invaluable knowledge of Skye history and mythology that is unfortunately fading from collective memory. \nWe are interested in hearing stories and recollections from across the island\, to explore the connections between crofting\, land struggle\, changes in Gaelic culture\, economic pressures\, colonial wealth and activism on Skye. Through these conversations\, and with an awareness of the current moment of upheaval\, we hope to use the film project to begin to imagine different ways of honouring the past and living well together in the future. \nIf you think you have something to share\, we’d be excited to hear from you\, but would also welcome you to join and listen. This event will take place online via Zoom. Please sign up via eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Highland Council's draft tourism infrastructure plan for Skye and Raasay
DESCRIPTION:Highland Council are producing a Highland-wide Tourism Infrastructure Plan. Their draft plan of Skye and Raasay’s existing tourism infrastructure and gaps in provision is available here. \nThe Council’s distinction between tourism infrastructure and general infrastructure risks missing opportunities for tourists as well as residents. Infrastructure to improve the limited public transport on Skye is not considered by the draft plan\, yet would benefit tourists as well as residents\, for example\, if visitors could leave their cars either at a hub location or at their accommodation and travel more by bus. The development of the three active travel/cycle projects on Skye is also an opportunity for infrastructure investment to benefit visitors as well as residents. \nSkyeConnect will host a zoom meeting to discuss these points and other aspects of the draft Skye plan. Contact Alistair Danter alistair@skye-connect.com for the zoom link. \nTo respond to the Council’s draft plan directly\, please email your comments to Leona Joiner at the Highland Council\, by 18th December.
