SUMMARY:Beyond the Great Reset: The Systems Change Summit
DESCRIPTION:The world is in a deep\, systemic crisis\, both economically and environmentally. But is the plan for a Great Reset of capitalism as formulated by the World Economic Forum the best way forward? We do not think so.  \nThe Systems Change Alliance has “invited some of the greatest and most prolific activists and thinkers in the world to help us envision a world Beyond the Great Reset. The current economy has largely failed us in creating economic democracy and sustainability. Therefore\, we need to look beyond corporate capitalism for answers to worldwide economic inequality and environmental destruction.” \nJoin Richard Heinberg\, Helena Norberg Hodge\, Daniel Christian Wahl\, James Quilligan\, Sohail Inayatullah\, Byron Joel and others on how we can create a world beyond “corporate sustainability” and move toward renewable cultures and needs-based economies. \nFor more info email info@systemschangealliance.org

SUMMARY:The Economics of Biodiversity: conversation with Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta
DESCRIPTION:“How can a better understanding of nature help us build resilient economies and achieve sustainable prosperity for all? Join Professor Dasgupta and Craig Bennett (Chief Executive of The Wildlife Trusts) as they discuss the findings of the recently published review on the Economics of Biodiversity and what should happen next. \nThe Review\, led by Professor Dasgupta and commissioned by HM Treasury\, is the first of its kind and shows that rather than fuelling economic development\, our current activity from infrastructure to unsustainable farming practices and pollution\, is eroding the very foundation on which our economy sits\, putting at risk the prosperity of future generations. \nThe opportunities that investing in nature presents are huge – and the chance to lead a change in thinking and policy across the world is one our Government should not miss.” \nTo register and submit questions in advance\, click here.

SUMMARY:Growing native trees from seed
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Knott for a practical talk on how to grow your own trees at home. There has been a huge shift towards tree planting in recent years\, and this is likely to continue\, greatly increasing the demand for trees.  However\, it can be hard to source local provenance stock of native species\, and growing your own is an option for most of us\, with very little space and effort needed.   \nPhil has been involved in amateur tree growing for as long as he can remember and grows several thousand trees on his croft each year.  This talk will focus on the whole process\, from seed and cutting collection to stratification and storage to onward aftercare.  It will be full of lots of practical tips on this extremely rewarding activity. \nBook here.

SUMMARY:Climate Networks for the Future: Let's Get Trashed
DESCRIPTION:The 2050 Climate group is hosting a knowledge sharing event with Scottish Young Leaders and Malawi Young Leaders to tackle the problem of waste management. \nTwo speakers\, one from Malawi and one from Scotland\, will provide insight into the challenges each country faces and the positive work each country is doing too. As this is a global issue\, we hope to focus on what we can learn from each other and take forward. More on each speaker coming soon! \nFollowing the speakers\, we will go into break-out rooms to discuss: “What is the biggest challenge for waste management? What can be done by politicians to facilitate waste management?” \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Exploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhoods: Introduction
DESCRIPTION:The 20-minute concept has gained attention internationally and has been developed in cities such as Melbourne\, Portland and Paris. The concept looks at having all your basic needs – health and social care\, shops\, work hubs\, places to socialise –  met within a 20-minute walk\, wheel or cycle from where you live. \nThe Scottish Government’s 2020-21 Programme for Government  announced the ambition of 20- minute neighbourhoods and the concept has gained significant traction since the COVID-19 pandemic with people staying closer to home to access support and services. \nThe  Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland is holding four events\, each with a panel of speakers and breakout rooms. \n\nExploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhood: Introduction Thu 6th May (13:00 to 14:30pm)\nExploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhood: Getting around and accessing services Thursday 17th June (13:00 to 14:30)\nExploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhood: Social connection\, housing and greenspace Thu 15th July (13:00 to 14:30)\nExploring Scotland’s 20-minute neighbourhood: Designing in the community Thu 26th Aug (13:00 to 14:30)\n\nTo sign up to the first event\, please send an email to event@alliance-scotland.org.uk

SUMMARY:Routes to Action: A Scottish Vision for Agroecology
DESCRIPTION:There is growing interest in agroecology and how we transition to a food and farming system which works in harmony with nature\, adapts to climate changes\, builds a thriving farming sector and sustainably provides citizens with healthy and nutritious food. \nFFCC’s latest report Farming for Change introduces new research from IDDRI which includes comprehensive and systematic technical modelling for a transition to agroecology across UK nations. FFCC are now exploring how to translate this detailed and rigorous piece of research into practical projects which support the transition to agroecology by 2030.

SUMMARY:When will it flower? Plants and climate change by Alastair Fitter
DESCRIPTION:Plants now come into flower earlier than they used to\, because of warmer spring temperatures driven by rapid climate change. The scale of change is dramatic but varies greatly among species. The talk will explore the reasons for that and its consequences.\n\n\n\nAlistair Fitter is Emeritus Professor of Ecology at the University of York.\n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:A new vision for land use in Scotland: A Story for the Future
DESCRIPTION:A series of evenings discussing future land use in Scotland\, presented by SEDA on conjunction with the James Hutton Institute. \nOver the course of six weeks\, nearly 50 of the best-informed speakers on all aspects of rural land use will engage in six “conversations” — each focused on a different aspect of how land is used and how it could be better used\, in Scotland. The speakers will include LEAF (Linking Environment  And Farming) CEO Caroline Drummond\, social entrepreneur and former Greenpeace scientific  director Jeremy Leggett\, Glasgow University economist Prof Ronald MacDonald\, NatureScot CEO  Francesca Osowska\, Director Crown Estate Scotland & Corrour Estate Hugh Raven\, representing sectors from farming\, forestry\, renewable energy\, to tourism and landowners. \nJoining the speakers will be a selection  carefully curated contributions from Scotland-based poets and musicians\, intended to  stimulate fresh ways of thinking. Musicians and  artists who will participate include Hamish Napier\, Pau de Planet\, Su-a Lee\, Chris Powici\, Kirsty  Law and The Poozies. \nBy going back to basics\, analysing the evidence and discussing new ways of building bridges between different sectors\, SEDA hopes the event will move the debate out of the silos of traditional entrenched positions\, opening up new ways of thinking about land use. One goal is to feed into the Scottish Government’s programme of creating Regional Land Use Frameworks by 2023 – a coherent programme of land reform to maximise the potential of Scotland’s land in tackling climate change. As importantly\, the aim is to make connections between potentially competing future uses of the land\, to see ways they can join up to have the maximum effect\, to start discourse on how they can work together\, and build a picture of what can be achieved and how this process can involve the wider population of the country\, in changing the way the land is seen and used for the future. \n\nMonday 01 March: The Lay of the Land\nMonday 08 March: Soil and Growth\nMonday 15 March: Ecosystems and Energy\nMonday 22 March: Natural Benefits\nMonday 29 March: New Rural Economy\nMonday 12 April: A Story for the Future\n\nTickets for the whole series or individual evenings can be booked here.
